Project Management Institute (PMI) has appointed global organisational consulting firm Korn Ferry to support the recruitment of its next President and Chief Executive Officer, with the incoming leader expected to oversee the organisation’s strategy and strengthen its role in an increasingly AI-driven project management profession.
The organisation has confirmed that it will undertake a comprehensive global search, considering both internal and external candidates.
PMI’s Board of Directors will be responsible for selecting the successful candidate, with the recruitment process intended to support a smooth leadership transition.
The announcement places the future direction of PMI, its international membership and its response to technological change at the centre of the leadership appointment.
New CEO to oversee PMI’s global project management strategy
The incoming President and CEO will be responsible for implementing PMI’s strategy for project success and expanding the organisation’s international impact.
The role will also involve advancing the project management profession and supporting PMI’s global community of members and volunteers.
As a professional organisation serving project managers and other delivery professionals, PMI plays a role in developing professional standards, qualifications, learning opportunities and industry knowledge.
AI transformation identified as a leadership priority
PMI has specifically identified artificial intelligence as an important consideration in its search for a new chief executive.
The organisation said its next leader would be expected to ensure that both PMI and the project management profession remain essential in an AI-driven transformation environment.
AI is increasingly influencing activities traditionally undertaken by project professionals, including planning, scheduling, reporting, risk identification and project performance monitoring.
These developments are creating new requirements for professional development, technical understanding and the management of AI-enabled project delivery.
For PMI, the leadership transition comes as professional bodies face growing expectations to help practitioners develop the capabilities needed to manage increasingly technology-dependent projects.
The incoming CEO will be tasked with implementing the organisation’s strategy while maintaining its relevance to project professionals working across different industries and regions.
Korn Ferry to manage international recruitment process
Korn Ferry will work with PMI to identify and assess potential candidates through a global recruitment process. The search will include candidates from within PMI as well as external applicants.
PMI has not disclosed a timetable for completing the recruitment process, the expected appointment date or the identity of any shortlisted candidates.
The announcement also does not provide details about the circumstances surrounding the leadership transition.
The recruitment represents an important governance decision for the organisation as it seeks to maintain its international influence and respond to changes in how projects and programmes are managed.
With AI adoption, workforce development and project delivery effectiveness becoming increasingly prominent issues across the profession, PMI’s next chief executive will be responsible for guiding the organisation through a period of technological and professional change.
