Black & Veatch has completed a 150MWdc utility-scale solar project in Texas for Mitsui, with the facility receiving final approval to connect to the state’s power grid.
Three W Solar, located across approximately 875 acres near Hillsboro, has achieved substantial completion and received approval from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), clearing the way for final turnover to Mitsui’s operations and maintenance organisation.
The 150MWdc, or 110MWac, facility represents Mitsui’s first utility-scale solar project in the US and is expected to have sufficient generation capacity to power as many as 45,000 homes.
EPC programme reaches final milestone
Black & Veatch served as engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project, delivering both the solar generation facility and associated collector substation infrastructure.
Project management and delivery activities have been underway since 2024, with major milestones including installation of all racking piles, delivery and installation of the generator step-up transformer and completion of commissioning activities.
ERCOT approval represented the final requirement before the facility could connect to the Texas power grid and move into its operational phase.
Narsingh Chaudhary, president of Fuels & Natural Resources for Black & Veatch, said: “We are proud to support Mitsui’s energy strategy through the successful delivery of Three W Solar, a project that strengthens its energy portfolio and contributes to Texas’ growing generation capacity.”
Mitsui reaches first US utility-scale solar milestone
Completion of Three W Solar represents a significant step in Mitsui’s renewable energy programme as its first utility-scale solar development in the US.
Shinya Umehara, Senior Vice President and Divisional Operating Officer at Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), said the project represented a commitment to meeting future energy demand in Texas.
“We are thankful for Black & Veatch’s expertise and support throughout the entire project lifecycle,” he said.
Arron Lewis, renewables solution leader for Black & Veatch, added that the project brought together engineering, procurement and construction expertise to deliver new renewable generation capacity for the Texas market.
Following substantial completion and grid approval, the project will now transition from EPC delivery to Mitsui’s operations and maintenance organisation.
