Water technology company Gradiant is expanding its Global Engineering Center in Coimbatore, India, with plans to more than double its engineering workforce as it increases delivery capacity for projects across semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and other water-intensive industries.

The expansion will increase the centre’s workforce from approximately 100 to more than 200 engineering professionals and broaden its role in the engineering and design of Gradiant projects worldwide.

The Coimbatore operation will bring together multidisciplinary capabilities covering process engineering, detailed design and project engineering, allowing the team to take greater responsibility for projects across Gradiant’s international portfolio.

“Coimbatore combines strong engineering talent with a deep industrial heritage, making it an important location for Gradiant as we scale our global engineering capabilities,” said Govind Alagappan, COO at Gradiant.

“This expansion strengthens our multidisciplinary organization and enables greater ownership of complex projects for customers across markets.”

Expansion creates project management career pathways

The investment will create positions across a range of engineering disciplines, with employees working on international projects involving advanced water and wastewater technologies.

Gradiant said professionals at the centre will gain experience of global engineering standards and multidisciplinary project execution.

The expansion will also create development routes into technical leadership, project management and international project-facing positions, with experienced engineers supporting the development of newer members of the workforce.

The company identified Coimbatore’s engineering talent pool and established industrial and manufacturing sector as factors behind its continued investment in the city.

The centre will support projects across sectors including semiconductor manufacturing, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and advanced manufacturing.

Hari Prasad, Managing Director – India at Gradiant, said: “India is becoming increasingly important to Gradiant’s global growth strategy. Our investment in Coimbatore allows us to combine India’s engineering talent with our global project pipeline, strengthening our ability to support customers in India and around the world.”

Water infrastructure demand grows alongside AI investment

The expansion comes as investment in semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centres increases demand for industrial water treatment and wastewater recycling systems.

These industries can require significant quantities of high-quality water, making water supply, treatment, reuse and wastewater management important elements of new industrial developments.

Gradiant is already delivering water infrastructure projects in India.

Its portfolio includes a 10,000 cubic metre-per-day wastewater recycling project supporting a solar photovoltaic manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu.

The company has also delivered an integrated ultrapure water, wastewater treatment and recycling, and zero liquid discharge facility for a US semiconductor manufacturer at a site in Gujarat.

India operations to form global engineering hub

Gradiant plans to continue expanding its engineering capabilities in India over the next three years.

Its Chennai and Coimbatore operations are intended to form a strategic engineering hub supporting the company’s international project portfolio.

The expanded Coimbatore centre will provide engineering and project execution capability as Gradiant responds to increasing demand for water infrastructure from industries undergoing significant capacity expansion.

The investment will also increase the role of Gradiant’s Indian engineering teams in the design and delivery of complex international projects, with the company positioning India as both a growing market for its water technologies and a base for its global engineering operations.
