Wrike has launched a new Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) solution designed to help organisations bridge one of the biggest challenges facing modern project management offices: connecting strategic planning with day-to-day project execution.
The new platform, Wrike SPM powered by Shibumi®, aims to give executives real-time visibility into how strategic investments are performing, enabling faster decision-making and reducing reliance on manual reporting and disconnected systems.
The launch reflects a growing shift in the project management software market as organisations seek to move beyond traditional project tracking towards integrated portfolio management capable of linking business strategy directly to delivery outcomes.
Closing the strategy-to-execution gap
According to Wrike, many organisations continue to manage strategic planning and project execution in separate platforms, making it difficult for executives to understand whether investment decisions are delivering the intended business benefits.
The company describes this disconnect as the “Fog of Business“, where leadership teams rely on outdated information, project management offices spend significant time reconciling data manually, and portfolio decisions are made without a clear picture of delivery performance.
Alexey Korotich, Chief Product Officer at Wrike, said organisations need a more connected approach to business transformation.
“The pressure to transform is real, but transformation fails when strategy and execution live in two different worlds.”
He added that the platform replaces fragmented reporting with a live connection between strategic objectives and operational delivery.
“Leaders can make faster decisions, direct resources toward what actually matters, and know with confidence whether their investments are delivering measurable outcomes.”
Focus on portfolio management maturity
The new solution combines Wrike’s work management capabilities with strategic portfolio management technology acquired through Shibumi.
Among its core features are integrated strategic planning, real-time portfolio visibility, scenario modelling and automated benefits tracking.
The platform enables organisations to compare alternative investment scenarios before committing resources, helping leaders assess the impact of delaying initiatives, reallocating capacity or changing priorities without disrupting existing delivery programmes.
It also seeks to reduce the administrative burden on PMOs through automated reporting that converts project-level progress into strategic performance insights.
Bob Nahmias, Chief Executive Officer of Shibumi, said the combined capabilities provide organisations with an end-to-end strategy execution platform.
“Shibumi’s SPM capabilities and board-level strategic expertise, combined with Wrike’s industry-leading work delivery platform and project execution capabilities, deliver a best-in-class, end-to-end strategy execution solution.”
Wrike said early access customers have already begun using the platform to model portfolio scenarios and improve strategic decision-making.
Project management perspective
The launch reflects a broader evolution in the role of the PMO. Increasingly, organisations expect project management functions not only to oversee delivery but also to provide strategic insight into whether investments are achieving business objectives.
Traditional project reporting often measures outputs such as schedule, budget and scope. However, executive teams are placing greater emphasis on outcomes, including value realisation, strategic alignment and return on investment. This has accelerated demand for Strategic Portfolio Management platforms capable of connecting board-level priorities with operational execution.
The emphasis on real-time portfolio visibility also mirrors wider trends in digital project management. As AI and automation become embedded within enterprise platforms, organisations are looking to reduce the time spent producing reports and instead enable PMOs to focus on portfolio governance, prioritisation and decision support. The value lies less in generating dashboards than in providing trusted, timely information that allows leaders to make informed trade-offs as priorities evolve.
For project professionals, the emergence of integrated SPM platforms signals the continuing shift of project management from an operational discipline towards a strategic capability. As organisations pursue increasingly complex transformation programmes, the ability to demonstrate how individual projects contribute to organisational objectives is becoming just as important as delivering them on time and within budget.
