Google has strategically brought on board core members of the artificial intelligence coding startup Windsurf, following the cessation of Windsurf’s acquisition discussions with OpenAI. This move is set to bolster Google DeepMind’s ongoing efforts in agentic coding and the development of its advanced AI model, Gemini.

Windsurf’s Chief Executive Officer, Varun Mohan, alongside co-founder Douglas Chen, and several integral research and development staff, will now integrate into the Google DeepMind team. Their expertise will be leveraged to advance projects focused on autonomous coding agents, a critical area for enhancing the capabilities of AI systems like Gemini.

While Google did not acquire an equity stake in Windsurf, it secured a non-exclusive license for certain proprietary technologies developed by the startup. Financial terms of the talent acquisition were not disclosed.

In the wake of these developments, Windsurf has announced leadership transitions. Jeff Wang, formerly Windsurf’s head of business, has been appointed interim CEO, and Graham Moreno, Vice President of Global Sales, will assume the role of President.
